Do you want to support a dynamic charity working at the forefront of the cost of living crisis and the twinned challenges of food poverty and unhealthy diets?
Alexandra Rose Charity’s vision is for everyone to have access to healthy and affordable food. Our mission is to give families access to fresh fruit and vegetables in their communities.
Through our Rose Vouchers for Fruit & Veg Project we’ve created an innovative response to tackle the problem of food poverty and unhealthy diets. We started this work in 2014 with a small pilot supporting 45 families in the London Borough of Hackney. Since then, we’ve helped over 5,000 families across eight areas in the UK – five London Boroughs, Liverpool, Barnsley and Glasgow.
The concept is simple and effective. Working with local organisations that support young families (children’s centres, nurseries, refugee and migrant organisations), we distribute vouchers to over 2,300 families every week. The vouchers can be redeemed for fresh fruit & veg from local markets, independent greengrocers, convenience stores and even a mobile fruit & veg bus! So, the project ensures families can access a healthy diet and supports the vibrancy and sustainability of local independent food economies.
Our trustees tell us that they feel they can make a real difference through their involvement and applying their skills to support and develop our work.
We want to ensure that our board better reflects the diversity of those who belong to the communities that we support, and so we particularly welcome interest and applications from Black, Asian and ethnic minorities, people with disabilities and LGBTQ+ people.
This could be your first trustee role, or you could already have some experience as a trustee. We have a full trustee induction process, ongoing training, and a mentor to support you through your first year.
There are a number of skills that we don’t currently have on our board, so you might be able to support us if you have one of the following skills:
- Direct experience of the communities we work with and the challenges they face in accessing a healthy diet.
- A history of successful fundraising and/or knowledge of new fundraising techniques – especially the use of digital tools,
- Understanding of the risks and opportunities around data management, including data protection and cyber security,
- Knowledge of communications, brand/marketing and advocacy and how these can be used to advance the cause of a small charity.
We’re looking for trustees who have the knowledge, skills, and passion for taking a successful concept and turning it into a national movement to improve the UK’s food system. Our board meets four times a year, and participation can be in person or virtually. Trustee positions are unpaid, but expenses are paid. You will be expected to join one of the Charity’s subgroups – finance or operations – which also meet four times per year.
You can apply via Reach Volunteering. The deadline for applications is 5pm on Thursday 30th June.
We would also like to offer you an opportunity to have an informal conversation with
one of our current trustees or CEO to find out more about the role. If you’re interested, please do get in touch at info@alexandrarose.org.uk
